Earl Grey was responsible for the bill that abolished slavery throughout the British Empire, and it's possible that the tea he gave his name to played its own part in the abolitionist cause. Among the liberal circles in which the earl moved, many were boycotting sugar because of the plantations' use of slaves. So when Earl Grey stumbled on the idea of putting bergamot in tea, it provided an excellent alternative to sugar that would have helped the boycott along.
